Be sure they have completed the appropriate training in resume writing AND, preferably, career coaching AND hold industry credentials -- this will set them apart from resume writers who have no training and credentials to support their qualifications to write YOUR resume -- the most important tool in your job search! Do not be afraid to ask for proof of certification, if you so desire. Also, ask for references and / or feedback and testimonials from satisfied clients. Ask if you can contact any references. The resume writer should be able to provide you with a list of satisfied clients and their contact information. Do not be afraid to call them and ask them their overall impression of the resume writer and about the success they achieved with their resume and supporting documents.

  • Second: Ask the resume writer if they merely type the information you provide to them in a resume format OR if they actually use the information, along with their research efforts and  knowledge of your industry / position to craft a custom resume tailored specifically for you. Ask to see samples of their resume writing. Chances are, they are not going to provide you with direct samples of resumes they have written for people in your specific position or industry; however, you can get a good idea of their writing style and what to expect based on what they have written for someone else. If they have a Web site, samples should be provided online. If they merely type up the information you provide, RUN, RUN, RUN in the other direction -- fast!

  • Third: Inquire as to how the process works to find out exactly what to expect from them. For example, how do they obtain information from you. Do they conduct a face-to-face / phone interview, require you to complete a worksheet, or a combination of both? Will you have access to the writer during the process? How long does the process take? How many rounds of revisions can you make? What formats will the writer provide in the final package? Are there any additional or hidden costs involved? What happens if you are not happy with your resume? These are all questions you need to have answered before you commit to work with any resume writer.

While these recommendations may seem to be rigorous and time-consuming, I can assure you that they will save you valuable time and effort in the long run and help you build trust and confidence in your relationship with your resume writer from the starting line.
